She returned his frown. “That is not a compliment.”

When Helana started to rise up off the couch her lady-in-waiting interposed herself between the two, though Lady Ada would have been glad to let the two go at each other with full venom. It would be amusing but it would also be counterproductive to her end goals.

“Why don’t you instruct the young princess on how you want her posed? She’s a noblewoman from Jadwig, not a model. She knows nothing of what you need. She’s not even a common streetwalker of the type you bring back here too often for your own amusement.”

That roused Pierce’s anger. “I bring them back here to sketch and paint them!” he insisted. “I’m making art unlike anything ever seen in this kingdom ever before.

“Sketch, paint and bed,” Ada amended. “Just get the girl to do what you want and we’ll all be done here a lot quicker.”

“Fine!” he started to approach Helana, side-stepping Ada, but the princess held up a cautioning hand.
